MRRG with Dr. Glenn Clifton: The New Old Woman of the 1930s -- 4 PM Friday March 10th

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce that the next MRRG meeting will take place at 4 PM on Friday, March 10th in JHB 617. The meeting will feature a short talk followed by a Q & A with Dr. Glenn Clifton. The talk and Q & A will focus on Dr. Clifton’s article, “The New Old Woman of the 1930s: Aging and Women’s History in Woolf, Sackville-West and Holtby”, recently published in intervalla. The article examines how Woolf, Sackville-West, and Holtby respond to a cultural hostility towards older women and spinsters but also use older protagonists to represent an element of women’s history, positioning those protagonists as critical sifters of the traditions of the past who have something essential to contribute to the future of the women’s movement.

Dr. Clifton holds a PhD in English from the University of Toronto. His scholarly research examines modernist representations of aging as engagements with history and temporality. His research articles have appeared in Journal of Beckett Studies, Henry James Review, SHAW: The Annual of George Bernard Shaw Studies, and ELT. He teaches literature and creative writing at Sheridan College, and is working on his first collection of stories.

Please find a poster and abstract about the talk attached. For a pre-circulated copy of the article, please contact illya.nokhrin@mail.utoronto.ca

We hope to see you there,

Illusha and Robin
