On Bloomsday, with Nathan Murray

We're pleased to welcome our own Nathan Murray as our guest at this month's meeting. We will meet at 2 PM in JHB 718 on February 25 to discuss an excerpt from Nathan's dissertation chapter on "Playing Bloom: Ulysses, Bloomsday and Hermeneutic Readings". Nathan's chapter explores the phenomenon of Bloomsday, the annual holiday celebrating James Joyce's Ulysses, and examines the specific material conditions that gave rise to it. These material conditions stem from Joyce himself, from the text, and from fans of the novel. The chapter is part of Nathan's dissertation "The Best Loved Man Who Never Lived: Modernist Character in Celebration and Criticism", which examines the shift in understanding character over the twentieth century, focusing on amateur responses to character. All are welcome--no Ulysses experience necessary!
